This NICTA study was conducted with the aim of identifying possible opportunities for the advancement of Australian telemedicine with the rollout of the ubiquitous high-speed broadband network. After examining a number of domestic and international case studies and trials, and identifying barriers to telemedicine, the study expected that the NBN will have a critical role in overcoming a number of these barriers.
The study was undertaken with support and input from many experts in telemedicine and some expert comments are included. The report also provides an insight into the status of telemedicine internationally. Many telemedicine trials have taken place globally, many of which have been implemented without a strategic plan. With the roll out of the NBN, Australia has an opportunity to develop a coherent overall strategy and plan, and to subsequently deliver eHealth systems that exceed those achieved internationally.
