Innovation is a key to Australia’s future prosperity. Australia has many world-class research and development agencies that have highly skilled, committed scientist producing high-quality scientific outputs. Each year, many millions of dollars are allocated by Government to public sector research agencies to support innovation. Increasingly, it is being recognised that to maximise the return to the community, the science needs to be complemented by excellent project management.
In recent years there has been increased external scrutiny and accountability requirements on public research agencies, along with greater interest in the return from public research funding. These factors, along with greater engagement by public research agencies with other sectors (such as private companies) have led to a greater focus on the efficiency and effectiveness of research.
